Khalid Fateh Muhammad is a retired cavalry officer, novelist, short
story writer, translator, critic, and editor of a quarterly Urdu
magazine. He has authored twelve Urdu and two Punjabi novels, nine
collections of stories, and eight collections of translations of
international fiction into Urdu.
His fiction revolves around the common man, highlighting his miseries
from the perspective of the modern world. His emphasis is on his
psychological wounds, rather than the financial hardships he undergoes.
He believes in hope, and to drive his point home, he uses the tool of
fantasy, coupled, at times, with hallucinatory realism, and the stark,
gnashing reality staring at him.
His is a different voice, with a bitter message spelled out in the
sweetest of words. He uses symbols and metaphors to make his stories
more effective and appealing, but he writes what he feels, not what
others expect him to write.
