Punjab Rebel: History of Resistance and Rebellions in the Punjab reclaims a history long buried beneath colonial erasure and state-sponsored amnesia. Spanning four centuries — from the advent of Mughal rule to the catastrophe of Partition in 1947 — it traces the unbroken spirit of a people who resisted invaders, defied empires, and refused submission.

Through tribal uprisings, Sufi defiance, peasant revolts, revolutionary socialism, and mass politics, the book restores agency to Punjab's forgotten heroes. Challenging imperial narratives that reduced rebellion to lawlessness and martyrs to criminals, it argues that Punjab’s past is best understood not through rulers, but through those who resisted them.

About The Author:

Rai Muhammad Ahmad is an author and practicing advocate based in Lahore. Educated at Aitchison College and SOAS, University of London, he brings both a deep Punjabi sensibility and a rigorous decolonial methodology to his historical writing. His work challenges colonial categories and statist narratives, restoring agency to those that history has long forgotten. Written when he was twenty-two, Punjab Rebel is his debut book.
